In a healthy democracy there are four bodies that must not sleep in the same bed as a political party. Once this order is disturbed, the country will be sliding down a slippery road. The first office that must be allowed to practise its powers freely and independently is that of the Public Protector. It is worrisome and disappointing to hear most members of our ruling party intimidating and fighting against the country’s efficient and competent Public Protector. I wonder whether her contract will be renewed. Her sin is that of rooting out corruption.
The second entity that must not be tampered with is the IEC, for the elections to be free, credible and fair, members of the IEC must be credible people. The IEC must not be seen as aligning itself with any political formation. The third entity to be free of any political meddling is the NPA. This office must also be allowed to exercise its authority without fear or prejudice. Is that the case in our country?
Lastly, one other sensitive area that needs to be handled with care is the office that fights against serious cases, it is unfortunate that the Scorpions, which was efficient and competent, was nullified and replaced with the toothless Hawks which serves the political agenda. Once a country interferes with bodies such as those mentioned above, as is the case in our country, the results will be disastrous.
