Progress of MEGA’s bulk water projects

According to the Mpumalanga Economic Growth Agency, its bulk water projects in the Lowveld stood as follows on April 25.

Mbombela Municipality

Construction of Nsikazi South/Karino Scheme pipeline is at 15 per cent. Materials have been ordered and partially delivered

The water to Nsikazi South via Karino regional bulk water project has not yet been handed over but a consultant was appointed by the municipality on March 2.

The bulk water supply to Nsikazi North through 36ML/Nyongane water treatment plant project has not yet been handed over. A consultant was appointed by the department of water affairs on November 13.

The project design for the Nsikazi South/Karino Scheme treatment works has been completed. A contractor could not be appointed due to budget shortfall.

Nkomazi Municipality

Project implementation has commenced at

• Khombaso the extension of the exiting reticulation and gravity main is at 25 per cent

• Dludluma the reticulation and replacement of an asbestos pipeline is at 25 per cent

• Vlakbult the reticulation and three-kilometre bulk line upgrade is at 20 per cent

• Mabundzeni the upgrade of the reservoir and existing reticulation plant is at 15 per cent

• Magudu the extension of existing reticulation, reservoir and water treatment upgrade is at 15 per cent

• Designs Stentor – the reticulation, rising main and minipackage plant installation are to be completed by May 15 after water source challenges arose.

While designs have been completed, contractors could not be appointed due to budget constraints at:

• Masibekela extension of existing reticulation and replacement of rising main

• Mbuzini reticulation and gravity line upgrade and construction of 2ML reservoir

• Louiville reticulation, reservoir and treatment upgrade

• Schoemansdal North reticulation and bulk line reservoir upgrade and illegal connection and leak repairs

• Ngwenyeni reticulation and gravity main upgrade.
