PRAKTISEER – Locals realised that their surroundings were dirty and unhygienic and voluntarily embarked on a cleaning spree to tidy their environment.

On July 9, the locals partnered with the staff of Greater Tubatse Municipality (GTM), the Community Work Programme (CWP) and the environmental steward in Tubatse, Mr Collen Mojela, to ensure the township was spotless.

Mojela and the municipality gathered local kids from as young as five and adults to tackle the task.

“Our aim is to attain a clean, safe and healthy environment; we hate to see our community drowning in garbage. It hurts to see young children playing in the filthy streets. It’s littered with broken bottles that can injure the kids.

“We wish to collect all the litter around the clinic, churches and the community halls.

“Our plan is to protect and preserve the environment for future generations,” he told Steelburger/Lydenburg News

Mojela added, “If more youths join in cleaning the streets the cleaner our environment will be. Disease will also be curbed.”

After the cleaning campaign, the youngsters received food. Some also participated in sporting activities like netball and soccer at the Bogwasha sports grounds.
