Learners stage musical dream

WHITE RIVER – A magical and mystical dreamworld filled with green leaves, thick branches and interesting characters awaits the audience at The Dreaming – the first musical to be held at Uplands College for the past few years.

It will end on a high note with the gala evening at Uplands College Hall on Saturday (tomorrow). The Dreaming is an adaptation of the classic William Shakespeare play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, set in the Edwardian period with a shorter plot and storyline that encapsulates the magic of the fern woods, its king, queen and other inhabitants.

The team at Uplands College created the entire set from scratch with the decor and stage being set up especially for this occasion.

The cast consists of about 30 grade 10 to 12 learners who take drama as a subject under the tutelage of actress and teacher, Annette Engelbrecht.

“A lot of these kids are now acting in a musical for the first time. They are so excited and it has been a pleasure to see them grow in their roles. Drama has given these learners something to focus on and be good at,” said Engelbrecht.

The discipline required for drama has also filtered into their other school subjects and they have also improved tremendously in their academics, according to her.

“They now feel that they can also be good at something. It gives them a lot of self-confidence.”

The incidental music used in the production was written by Howard Goodall with lyrics and scripts devised by Charles Hart.

“The musical will appeal to anybody with themes of love, romance and laughter being predominant,” said musical director, Anneke Coetzer.

Tickets are available at R100 per person and include a dinner at the Uplands College Hall. A cash bar will also be available.
