Local girl headed for stardom
There was not a dry eye in the house when Elvis and Sbahle sang "Hillbrow", originally sung by Johannes Kerkorrel, midway through the captivating show.
WHITE RIVER – The Casterbridge Music Development Academy (CMDA) has unearthed a new young voice straight from the streets of KaBokweni. Sbahle Chauke (16) has impressed one and all during her time at the academy and recently got an opportunity to perform in front of a packed audience with Idols winner, Elvis Blue.
On September 20 Elvis Blue, who is also a managing board member of the Casterbridge Music Development Academy, took Sbahle to an EOH Corporate function to perform in their Mentors Concert at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.
Mentors was developed to client specifications with Elvis heading up an ensemble including the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra, the Mzanzi Choir and an impressive line-up of soloists.
South African Idols 2013 contestant Monde Msutwana, also from Mpumalanga, headed straight to Sbahle after her soundcheck and promised to come and visit her at the CMDA.
The dazzling show-stopper with its powerful message was performed to a 2 000 strong corporate audience. This could have been intimidating for the young Sbahle who had never been to the Sandton Convention Centre before. But, upon arrival, Elvis Blue took her under his wing. He rehearsed with her for their duet, walked her through the performance and escorted her on and off stage, all the while keeping a beady eye on her as the huge crew kicked into gear.
There was not a dry eye in the house when Elvis and Sbahle sang “Hillbrow”, originally sung by Johannes Kerkorrel, midway through the captivating show. “Sbahle’s was the song of the night” beamed Elvis afterwards.
Elvis Blue truly encapsulated the theme of the event and show – Mentors.
The CMDA incubates musical talent among Mpumalanga’s youth by coaching bands and vocalists and providing instrument coaching. The shy Sbahle crept into the hearts of all there – from musicians to stylists and catering crew – probably because she lifted the roof with her voice that reverberated around the cavernous room. “That performance with Elvis has changed my life,” said the young star.
Elvis Blue and Sbahle are both keen to rekindle their bond at this year’s Route 40 Youth Fest 2014 which is to be held from December 4 to 7 at the CMDA.
