Join in an play indigenous games

To stop indigenous games from being lost for future generations, local sports enthusiasts are recruiting players.

The aim is to start a league for these indigenous games. The games include dibeke, in which the
attacking team tries to kick the ball away from the defenders while the defenders can use their hands to get the ball away from them. Kgati is a rope-skipping game for three singing or chanting participants.
In diketo, each player tries to grab the most stones, throw them in the air and catch them in one hand. Morabaraba is a board game in some ways resembling chess or checkers. Ntonga is a stick-fi ghting. The player that hits his opponent with his stick the most in this play-fighting, wins.
“This is a great way for the youth to stay fit during the cold winter months. We have already started practising at the Mashekeng Stadium from 15:00 to 17:00 every day.
Anyone interested may come and join us,” said Mike Mashale, one of the organisers of the Thaba Chweu Traditional Games League. For more information, interested parties are invited to phone Mashale on 076-246- 1084 or Deeboy Mnisi on 082-316-4373.
