BURGERSFORT – The Limpopo SAPS are hot on the heels of suspects who committed a business robbery at one of the clothing stores in the Twin City complex.

The incident happened at about 14:50 on Saturday. The suspects absconded with cash and cellphones. “Five suspects allegedly entered the store, one pointed a firearm at while the other one ordered the other workers to lie down under gunpoint.

“Among the suspects, one who was reportedly wearing a work suit and carrying a bag asked who was in possession of the shop keys,” revealed Limpopo SAPS’s spokesperson, Brig Motlafelo Mojapelo. Mojapelo said one of the staff members was allegedly ordered to open the tills under severe duress, and the suspects took a cash amount of R8 500 and cellphones from the display. The total value all the stolen items is estimated at R114 396,90. According to Mojapelo, no shots were fired and no injuries sustained during the robbery. “The unknown suspects with faces covered in balaclavas and masks allegedly fled the scene on foot.”

Steelburger/Lydenburg News spoke to an eyewitness who was in the store during the robbery. The woman is a prominent restaurant owner in the CBD and said she was thankful to be alive.

“I was in the store during the robbery. Initially I was oblivious that the store was being robbed. I noticed the guy who was wearing the work suit. It was me, my daughter and him in the store; he pretended to be shopping. “Out of the blue, one of the staff emerged; she was in a jittery state. She kindly asked me to leave the store as it was unsafe for me and my three-year-old.”

The shopper revealed to the newspaper that she immediately left the store and called security and the SAPS. Unfortunately, it was too late, as the suspects had already vanished.

“I am thankful, because the lady saved my life and that of my daughter. She was traumatised, but she still conveyed the message and nodded that they were attacked,” added the eyewitness. The Limpopo SAPS requested anyone with information about the suspects to call 08600 10111 toll-free, or to contact the nearest police station. Police investigations continue.
