Intruders in pump station interrupted

“It’s not clear what the motive for the intrusion was, but the municipality is not ruling out the possibility that these rogues either wanted to vandalise or steal municipal infrastructure and equipment,” said the municipal spokesperson, Moloko Moloto.

SEKHUKHUNE – A group of eight armed men, allegedly after equipment at the Mamphogo Pump Station, did not succeed.

The men entered the premises where the pump station and reservoir of the Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) is located. These supply water to residents of Mamphogo, Dikgalaopeng, Moeding, Puleng and Manapyane villages.

“Their intrusion triggered an alarm and security personnel responded in no time. As the intruders fled, they fired shots at the security. They sustained no injuries.
“It’s not clear what the motive for the intrusion was, but the municipality is not ruling out the possibility that these rogues either wanted to vandalise or steal municipal infrastructure and equipment,” said the municipal spokesperson, Moloko Moloto.

He confirmed that a formal complaint was laid with the Sekhukhune SAPS who are now investigating a case of tampering with essential infrastructure.

The SDM condemned these criminal acts, which it believes are tantamount to sabotage. It urged members of the public who may have information that could lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of these criminals, to contact the police.

Members of the public are also encouraged to keep an eye on the water infrastructure and report any suspicious
activities to the SAPS on 08600 10111, or through the district municipality’s toll-free 449300 NN number, 0800 330 022.
