Covid cases are spiking in Limpopo
The provincial MEC for health, Phophi Ramathuba, said the time to be extra careful has arrived. “Our people need to understand that this variant will make it extra difficult to keep numbers low. Therefore we need to warn everyone about the urgent need for an extreme turnaround in behaviour.”
SEKHUKHUNE – The Limpopo Department of Health informed members of the public that the rapidly spreading
Delta variant of Covid-19 has been detected in the province.
The department believes that the variant might be responsible for the recent spike in Covid-19 cases and that it
is driving the third wave in the province, which figures had jumped from 385 cases
on Tuesday to 1 780 on Saturday.
The provincial MEC for health, Phophi Ramathuba, said the time to be extra careful has arrived. “Our people need to understand that this variant will make it extra difficult to keep numbers low. Therefore we need to warn everyone about the urgent need for an extreme turnaround in behaviour.”
This week, the province also saw increased numbers in low-age categories; 67 cases of children between naught
and nine years have been reported, and 638 cases of people between 15 and 34.
With the discovery of the Delta variant, unrepentant behavioural patterns such as social and political gatherings are a recipe for disaster. “If our people will continue to defiantly organise parties and other
social jamborees, the spread will be too difficult to contain,” warned Ramathuba.
