Limpopo mourns the death of Steve Kekana

Kekana has produced more than 44 albums in his career and collaborated with many artists, like PJ Powers, the late Hugh Masekela, Joe Nina, Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse and the late Jabu Khanyile.

SEKHUKHUNE – The Limpopo Provincial Government mourns the death
of music legend Steve Kekana. Premier Stanley Mathabatha said he had learned with a heavy heart of the passing of Kekana at age 63.

The artist passed away last Thursday in the Pietersburg Hospital due to Covid-19- related complications.

Kekana was born in Zebediela on August 4, 1958. The highly decorated singer-songwriter lost his sight at the
age of five and attended a school for the blind in the then Pietersburg. It is during his school years that he developed and nurtured his love of music.

“Our province is under a dark cloud as we mourn the death of our beloved musician, Steve Kekana. He remains
an inspiration to us and to persons with disabilities. His dedication and love of music is living proof that nothing
is impossible in life. Our heartfelt condolences to the family, fellow musicians, friends and fans. I wish the
Almighty will grant us strength during this difficult time. Your pain is our pain,” said Mathabatha.

He held a LLB and B Juris degree. He was recently appointed lecturer of law at
Unisa.

In 1979 and 1989, Kekana won the SABC Black Music Award for best male vocalist. He went on to win numerous
awards, including the Sama Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. He was  buried  at the Zebediela Cemetery on Thursday.
