Police clamp down on illegal firearms

SEKHUKHUNE – The Limpopo SAPS seem to be succeeding in the battle to get illegal firearms off the streets. In recent weeks, the SAPS has arrested more than 10 suspects and recovered 14 firearms.
The arrests included two suspects, both aged 31, in the Jane Furse policing area last Wednesday. They are believed to be part of a criminal gang that has been tormenting communities in and around this area.
“The suspects were arrested at separate locations during a sting operation by the Crime Intelligence Unit, detectives and Limpopo Highway Patrol.
“Two nine-millimetre pistols were confiscated. Preliminary police investigations have linked the suspects to business robberies committed in the Apel and Sekhukhune areas. The manhunt for the remaining suspects is still underway,” said Brig Motlafelo Mojapelo, Limpopo SAPS spokesperson.
Meanwhile, an intelligence driven operation that was conducted on Monday by the members of the Provincial
Organised Crime team, with the Crime Intelligence Unit, led to the apprehension of three suspects, aged between 27 and 31, for possession of illegal explosives at Glen Cowie location.
“Police discovered five electric bomb detonators that were concealed inside the suspects’ Toyota Etios Sprint motor vehicle. The origin of the explosives is unknown at this stage but the police investigations are
still ongoing,” added Mojapelo
The provincial commissioner of Limpopo, Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe, has welcomed the arrests and urged police to
maximise crime prevention operations and visibility, especially in identified crime
hotspots.
All the arrested suspects have already appeared in various Magistrate’s Courts across the Sekhukhune region.
