BURGERSFORT – Management of Burgersfort Lodge and other businesses close to the old Burgersfort landfill site are complaining of illegal dumping.

Nearby residents said various measures have been put in place to try and stop the dumping, but residents continue to dump waste illegally.

Ina Schaefer from Burgersfort Lodge said there is an unpleasant smell and it creates a problem for her clients.
“We are unable to open windows to enjoy fresh air because of the flies and mosquitos. Our health is at risk because of the bad smell coming from the illegal dumping. Because of the rubbish and debris our sewers often block or leak and this is costly for us,” she said.

She revealed that they previously cleaned the streets and the illegal dumping area, but people continued to dump.

“The problem is that every time we or FTLM clean the place people come and dump rubbish again, especially at night,” she added.
Schaefer said they are pleading with the FTLM to punish those doing the illegal deeds.
Another resident, Suleiman Nkhoma, said they are tired of the stench of nappies, smoke, rats and flies. “We must protect our empty space and keep it clean at all times,” he said

FTLM’s communications manager, Thabiso Mokoena, said the municipality has appointed a service provider to clean the street and road towards the old Burgersfort landfill site. This started on August 2.

“The gate to deny access to the site has also been installed just next to Burgersfort Lodge.”
He said the municipality notified residents about the closure of the site in 2018.

“The alternative licensed site for disposal is Malogeng landfill site at Apel. There is a R1000 fine for those caught dumping illegally.
“Security is available within the municipal landfill site and they will also be conducting the routine patrols from the newly erected gate.”

He added, “Those who conduct such offences must be reported to the municipality immediately. Burgersfort Lodge must also work together with the municipality by maintaining the visual area outside the yard in order to maintain cleanness”.
