Search for occupants in swept cars starts

Maringa added that, "The vehicles were later recovered on the riverbank and at this stage, all the occupants are still missing. The search for them started on Wednesday morning.”

STEELPOORT – The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has confirmed that a search for the occupants of two vehicles that had been swept off a Dwars River bridge on Tuesday December 7, began today.

The divers have began the search.

Speaking to Steelburger/Lydenburg News, the departmental spokesperson, Mike Maringa, said motorists are advised not to attempt crossing low-lying bridges and flooded roads following the warning of flash floods by the South African Weather Service.

The bridge was flooded.

“Two vehicles, a kombi and a sedan, were swept away in a flash flood when they attempted to cross a bridge covered with water next to Thorncliffe Mine in Sekhukhune around Steelpoort on Tuesday afternoon.”

A photo of the taxi did the rounds on social media depicting how badly it had been damaged.

Maringa added that, “The vehicles were later recovered on the riverbank and at this stage, all the occupants are still missing. The search for them started on Wednesday morning.”

The taxi was swept away.

The Steelpoort area had recorded heavy rainfall over the past three days prior to the incident.
