DA files complaint with SAHRC against Rethabile clinic manager

The manager allegedly ordered a disabled employee to clean the clinic without the use of her crutches.

According to the DA political head for Polokwane Constituency, Jacques Smalle, the disabled employee is both a cleaner and a data capturer at the Rethabile clinic in Limpopo, Review Online reports.

“We were shocked to learn that she can’t even stand or walk without her crutches, let alone clean a clinic,” he said.

Smalle says the woman alleges that her line manager found her cleaning one of the offices, and ordered her to leave crutches at home in order for her to clean faster.

The employee, however, reported the matter to the head of the department and human resource manager at the district level, but Smalle says no attempts have been made to resolve the issue.

“The DA condemns the clinic manager’s lack of compassion and inhumane request to discriminate and humiliate a disabled employee like this. We urge the MEC for Health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, to probe this incident and take the necessary action against the clinic manager to ensure all employees are able to work in a non-discriminatory environment where they are treated fairly,” Smalle concluded.
