Elderly Hillcrest couple hijacked, husband shot

The hijackers fled in the couple’s car with the paralysed wife, who was later found in KwaDabeka.

An elderly couple in their 80s who were visiting friends for lunch were hijacked on Sander Road in New Germany just after 12pm on Thursday.

According to Joe Ribeiro, Ashley Residents Neighbourhood Watch controller, the couple parked their VW Tiguan outside their friend’s house, Highway Mail reported.

“When they were leaving, two men approached them and shot the husband, 89, in the chin and fled with his wife who is paralysed and in a wheelchair,” said Ribeiro.

Peter Williams of the GlenPark Neighbourhood Watch said the old woman was found in KwaDabeka.

“They threw her out and somebody saw her and alerted the police. She has been taken to hospital. The car was also recovered,” he said.

Ribeiro applauded the quick response from police, security companies, neighbourhood watches and the ambulance services.
