Petrol price hike hits hard

The higher paraffin price is a huge concern, as it will hit the poorest the hardest, particularly as we look to keep warm in the winter months.

It is the news everyone had been dreading … another petrol price hike – and a big one at that.

From Wednesday, the petrol price will rise by 82 cents a litre and diesel will cost between 85 and 87 cents a litre more.

In Gauteng, a litre of 93 petrol will now cost R15.54. The wholesale price of illuminating paraffin will rise by 82 cents per litre, while the retail price of LPG will increase by R1.38 per kg.

We had just been hit by a big petrol price rise in May: 49 cents and diesel by 58 cents per litre.

The increase, due to stronger international oil prices and a large deficit carried over from April, hits South Africans hard. School holidays loom at the end of the month, so people will have to plan their trips better, or avoid them altogether.

South Africans’ wallets have already been hit hard in recent times with the increase of VAT, the rise in the cost of living and high levels of unemployment taking its toll.

The higher paraffin price is a huge concern, as it will hit the poorest the hardest, particularly as we look to keep warm in the winter months.

When will it end?
