WATCH: Traffic chaos in Pretoria CBD due to municipal strike

Traffic in the Pretoria CBD was at a standstill due to roads blocked by buses as municipal workers protested for wage increases.

The blockade affected major feeder routes, including the N1, N4, and Mabopane highways, Pretoria Rekord reports.

In the Pretoria CBD, major streets such as Madiba, E’skia Mphahlele, WF Nkomo, Thabo Sehume, and Nelson Mandela Drive were affected.

South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) regional secretary Mpho Tladinyane confirmed the municipal workers were protesting about wage increases.

“It’s not only municipal bus drivers that are on strike, but general workers affiliated with Samwu are also demanding an 18% increase,” he said.

“We have spoken to the senior managers about the increase but it seems there’s not a way forward.”

He said the union would continue with their protest “and bring the city to a standstill”.

Marissa Ferreira, who works in the CBD, told Rekord that the buses were parked across different intersection but no one was inside the buses.
