Weather alert: Cold front hits parts of SA this week

The South African Weather Service (Saws) has released its latest weather forecast for Monday, 12 May 2025.

The weather service predicts fine and cool to warm conditions in the east of the country. Isolated to be expected, resulting in cold to “very cold” weather along the escarpment in the Eastern region.

Weather warnings: Monday, 12 May

The forecaster issued a yellow level 2 warning for damaging waves leading to difficulty in navigation at sea for small vessels and personal watercraft is expected along the Eastern coastal regions.

Additionally, a yellow level 2 warning, damaging winds and waves resulting in difficulty in navigation and small vessels taking on water and capsizing within a locality, are expected along the coast.

Provincial weather forecast

Here’s what to expect in your province on Monday, 12 May:

Gauteng

Residents of Gauteng can expect partly cloudy and cool weather.

The region’s expected UVB sunburn index is “moderate”.

Residents should take the necessary precautions against prolonged sun exposure.

Mpumalanga:

Cloudy at first with morning fog in places over the Highveld, otherwise partly cloudy and cold to cool, but warm in places in the Lowveld.

Limpopo:

Morning fog and drizzle along the northern escarpment, otherwise cloudy and cool, becoming partly cloudy in the west from the afternoon.

North West:

Fine and cool to warm weather awaits North West residents.

Free State:

Residents of the Free State will experience cloudy conditions in the east, otherwise fine and cool but cold weather along Lesotho border.

Northern Cape:

Fine and cool to warm, but cold in the far south. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly to south-easterly.

Western Cape:

Fine and cool to warm conditions.

The wind along the coast will be moderate to strong north westerly to westerly along the south-west and south coast.

The expected UVB sunburn index: Moderate

Eastern Cape (western half):

Fine and cool. The wind along the coast will be light westerly to north westerly.

Eastern Cape (eastern half):

Residents will experience fine and cool conditions. The wind along the coast will be light north-westerly to northerly.

KwaZulu-Natal:

Partly cloudy with isolated showers and rain in the north-east in the morning, otherwise fine and cold to cool.

The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh northerly to north-easterly.

The expected UVB sunburn index: High
