Police women from all around the country are competing in their colourful provincial netball attires at the SAPS Netball Nationals hosted at the NWU Pukke’s netball courts in Potchefstroom this week.

The annual tournament, held from 27 September to 2 October this year, sees 10 teams, one from each province and a combined team, battle each other in five days of round robin action. “The team with the most points at the end of the round robin will be crowned the champion,” said Ursula Saker, recording secretary of the SAPS Netball National Executive Committee.

According to Saker this tournament gives the ladies the chance to relax, play competitive sport and have the chance to qualify for the SARPO Games as well as being chosen for the SA Police team for future tournaments. “This is great for our policewomen to network as well and have a great time, whilst keeping fit,” she added.

The acting police commissioner of the North West Maj. Genl. Jacob Tsumane also showed his full support of the championships during the impressive welcoming ceremony. “Sport plays a vital role in our daily lives. It promotes health and unity and I urge every player to give their best and not give up when they fall down,” he advised. The tournament will conclude on Friday.
