Two Potchefstroomers will showcase their true giving spirits this December when they go on a wild tandem bike expedition to raise funds for the Abraham Kriel Children Home and the Amelia Care Centre’s various needs.

Cobus Steenkamp and Anina Schoeman will start their 600-kilometre journey through the sweltering Northern Cape in Nababeeb on 9 December with their journey lasting until 21 December.

“The idea of  doing this came from a crazy idea I had to promote the giving aspect of Christmas. The main theme is not to increase your standard of living this Christmas, but rather your standard of giving. We decided to combine our love for the outdoors and adventure and decided to do this tandem ride,” Cobus said.

The tandem duo will aim to tame the harsh outdoors with the Avalanche ENVI 29er Tandem bike in the dry and barren Namaqua desert. They will also update their blog regularly where the public can monitor their progress.

“The biggest challenges will be to survive the heat as well as the distance involved. Water and shade will also be extremely important. Our biggest motivation will be to bring smiles on the faces of those in need,” he added.

This initiative and idea will go a long way to ensuring a happy Christmas time for these two beneficiaries who have a long list of critical needs.

Amelia is currently in need of appliances for the new recreation room, such as a flatscreen television, a bar fridge as well as a DVD player. Abraham Kriel, on the other hand, is in need of funds for the restoration of one of their kitchens. Some of the necessities include a new sink, kitchen cupboards, tiling of the floor and the walls as well as the installation of the ceiling.
