NWU cruised to a 102 run victory against UCT at the Ibbies Oval on Wednesday as Ruan Haasbroek played one of his best innings for the NWU and in the tournament thus far with a breathtaking 90 (42) which included 5 fours and six sixes. He was especially brutal in the final over of the innings hitting UCT’s Craig Meier for 5 sixes in one over. Meier had bowled beautifully picking up 2 wickets earlier on, but saw his figures ruined in a matter of a few balls.
Haasbroek’s big hitting boosted NWU to a mammoth score of 200/7 after 20 overs. Haasbroek first anchored the innings and then let lose in the last couple of overs in a mature knock that showcases his talent with the bat. He also got good support from Jean Bredenkamp (30 off 27).
UCT struggled in their reply with Jack Newby retiring hurt early on and the rest of the top order losing their wickets cheaply. At one stage UCT were staring down the barrel at 20/4 after Sean du Plooy picked up 2/9 with his spin bowling in the opening two overs.
Things did not get better for UCT who were peeged back further by Dyllan Matthews (3/21) as they slumped to 98 all out.
It was only Geoffrey Dakin with a gusty 41 (30) who kept up any sort of resistance for the men from Cape Town.
NWU now play Maties at 18:00 at Senwes Park tonight in what should be a classic.
