World class World Cup hockey gets underway today at NWU Astroturf

This tournament will take place on African soil for the first time with the North West University having the honour of hosting and showcasing some of the top young u.21 hockey talent that the world has to offer.

After months of anticipation the FIH Junior Women’s Hockey World Cup will start this Friday 1 April in Potchefstroom at the NWU Astroturf with South Africa set to face England in their opening match.

This tournament will take place on African soil for the first time with the North West University having the honour of hosting and showcasing some of the top young u.21 hockey talent that the world has to offer. South Africa are in pool B together with England and Ireland and will look to start off brightly and progress through to the knockout stages.

SA and England clash in the opener at 11:00, before tournament favourites, the Netherlands and USA battle at 13:00.

Canada and Zimbabwe (15:00), Korea and Uruguay (17:00) and Argentina (current defending champions) and Austria (19:00) round off an opening day filled with top hockey.

On Saturday, 2 April, another cup contender, India will take on Wales at 09:00. Powerhouses, Germany take on Malaysia at 11:00, USA take on Zimbabwe (13:00), Canada face Netherlands (15:00) England battle Ireland at 17:00.

SA will face Ireland on Monday 4 April at 11:00 which could pan out to be a quarter-final decider depending on the outcome of the other pool matches. The final will take place on Friday, 12 April.
