Toti painter’s artwork up for grabs in CCPO donation drive

A talented Amanzimtoti artist donated one of her paintings to be used as a prize for a local NPO's donation drive.

A TALENTED local painter, Gillian van Wyk, recently donated a 40cm x 80cm wildlife painting to Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) for its tireless efforts in keeping the community safe.

The non-profit organisation has begun a donation drive, with the prize being Van Wyk’s artwork.

Van Wyk said that she donated the painting as she feels CCPO is a worthy cause, and they are always swift to respond to emergencies, and fill in a large gap in terms of both fighting crime and preventing it.

Art and the artist

When Van Wyk went on a trip to Kalagadi in 2018, she was awestruck with the vast open spaces and the sheer numbers of Springbok that were there.

“It was like a glimpse into the past when so many parts of South Africa had game roaming like this, before the settlers came, before any people came and took over the land. Wildlife has always inspired me, ever since I was a child. It was absolutely incredible and I had to capture that in a painting,” said

Her artistic process for the painting involved capturing the composition in a photograph, before drawing it according to a grid to make sure proportions were all correct.

She explains that she is particular about her paintings.

“I paint from my heart, and from what I see,” said Van Wyk.
