Fifteen drivers arrested for drunk driving in Merebank

The operation targeted drunk driving, illegal firearm possession, drug-related offences and the carrying of dangerous weapons.

A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY roadblock conducted in Himalayas Road in Merebank resulted in the arrest of 15 drivers for various offences recently.

Wentworth police in partnership with metro police, Merebank Community Police Sub Forum and PT Alarms, gathered along Himalayas Road to enforce the rules of the road.

The operation targeted drunk driving, illegal firearm possession, drug-related offences and the carrying of dangerous weapons.

According to Wentworth police spokesperson Captain Mbuso Gumede, several drivers were found to have blood alcohol levels exceeding the legal limit.

“The motorists were arrested on the spot and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. They were later released on station bail after being issued with dates for court appearance,” said Gumede.

Vispol Commander Lieutenant Colonel Clive Myburg conducted a parade and emphasised the importance of roadblock operations.

Motorists were safely directed to designated checkpoints, where their vehicles were searched and blood alcohol tests were conducted on each driver.

“The officers also conducted patrols and stop and searches in Merewent. Drivers were urged to exercise caution and drive safely on the road,” Gumede added.
