It was always going to be tough – Hunt

The Clever Boys are now on top of the Absa Premiership league table, thanks to a better goal difference, as they are tied on 31 points with Cape Town City.

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt says he is pleased with his player’s efforts following their 2-1 victory over Orlando Pirates at the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday night.

Heading to the game, Hunt said he was anticipating a difficult match against the Buccaneers, especially after their awful loss to Mamelodi Sundowns last weekend.

“It was always going to be tough to play Orlando Pirates after losing 6-0 on Saturday. There was a lot of effort from them, but once we got Gabadinho Mhango and Phakamani Mahlambi on the ball, I thought we could cause problems, which we did,” Hunt added.

“There were times when we lacked a little bit of quality which we didn’t have in the final third. All in all, we came here for three points, and we got it, but it was not easy. They are going through a tough time, we know that. I said to the players, it is not the best time to play them, you would rather have them winning 6-0 and you play them.  But it is a good three points for us, and it keeps us where we want to be in future.”

The win saw the Clever Boys go to the summit of the Absa Premiership table with 31 points level with Cape Town City, but a better goal difference sees Hunt’s charges occupying the top spot.
