Chiefs talisman Dolly on why actions speak louder than words

Dolly says he leads by example and always gives his best both on and off the field to be a good role model.


For Keagan Dolly, talking to his younger teammates and aspiring footballers from his township is not enough – he has to back it up with actions.

The 30-year-old Dolly says he leads by example and always gives his best both on and off the field to be a good role model.

He however has been under some pressure in the past few weeks with his contributions to Chiefs questioned by his critics and some supporters.

And before last week’s 2-1 win over Stellenbosch FC, he conceded that he sometimes gets distracted while helping his younger teammates. 

But Dolly upped his game against Stellies and got the winning goal in what was a difficult game for Chiefs.

“As a striker, an attacking player you always want to score,” Dolly told the Chiefs media team. 

“Or at least create chances for the team, so the team can win. So, I a, happy. I am getting my confidence back in front of goal. 

“And hopefully I can keep on scoring and help the team get to where we want to be,” added Dolly.

Dolly wants to inspire youngsters with displays

“It took me taking time after games to reflect, to see where I can improve has helped a lot you know. 

“I always say that I want to lead on the field with my work rate and performances. 

“I don’t want to lead by just talking to the youngsters. I mean there are a lot of youngsters who are still in the academy,” added Dolly. 

The former Bafana Bafana player who also had a four year stint in France with Lille, says young footballers from his hood need a role model. 

“There are also youngsters from Westbury where I come from who look up to me every day. 

“So, by working hard and staying grounded, trying to improve daily, it helps them. It proves to them that it is possible,” he added.

Dolly will hope to replicate the performance when Chiefs host Marumo Gallants at FNB Stadium on Saturday evening. 

Chiefs need to keep collecting points to stay in contention for the second place finish in the DStv Premiership to return to Caf competitions next season. 

They are currently fourth on the standings, tied on 40 points with Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United who are second and third above them through goal difference.
