Horrific car accident forces Chiefs midfielder to retire at 19

Wiseman Meyiwa has been confined to a wheelchair, the club has announced.

Meyiwa has been out of action for Chiefs since last year in October after he was involved in a car accident.

The 19-year-old midfielder will be released from hospital to return home to Pietermaritzburg, where he will receive further care.

Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung confirmed that the midfielder was unable to continue with his football career due to being in a wheelchair after the accident.

It’s not known if or how well he will be able to walk again.

Motaung said the club would continue to support the player as he looks to rebuild his life. Meyiwa was promoted to the club’s first team by coach Steve Komphela after his impressive stint in the club’s MultChoice Diski Challenge with Amakhosi.

“It’s unfortunate and has not been easy for him. We wanted to end the speculation and appeal to our supporters to support him. Disability is something that is beyond anyone’s control. We speak for support during this time,” said Motaung at a press conference at Chiefs headquarters in Naturena on Thursday afternoon. “We will take things step by step. We develop them to give them a platform. He will still be a part of us.”
