Why Cape Town City signed Mayambela

Cape Town City assistant coach Vasili Manousakis has revealed why the club signed Mark Mayambela.

City announced Mayambela’s signing on Tuesday and he made his debut for Benni McCarthy’s side against AmaZulu. The former Orlando Pirates and Chippa United midfielder made an immediate impact by forcing an own-goal from goalkeeper Siyabonga Mbatha in a 2-1 loss to Usuthu.

Speaking after the game Manousakis, they decided to sign Mayambela after seeing some good qualities in the couple of weeks in training with him.

“As a club we are lacking that presence, experience and calm to get us through some situations, and we know what he is all about,” said Manousakis.

“He can play in a number of positions, we’ve seen some good qualities in the couple of weeks in training with him, he’s just got better and better, a positive influence on the team, that’s what the coach wants.

“Injuries we have are making it hard for us to have a consistent line-up, and Gift Links is a big loss for us, which is adding pressure on the team.”
