Zwane backs Bafana to go for Afcon glory in Liberia

'We are going for the win, we know we can push ourselves and play good football,' said Zwane.

Themba Zwane says Bafana Bafana are staying positive, as the team jetted out to Monrovia on Sunday to take on Liberia this Tuesday in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier that they have to win to be sure of qualifying for the Afcon finals in the Ivory Coast.

Bafana played out a disappointing 2-2 draw at home to Liberia on Friday meaning only a victory in front of what is expected to be a vociferous home crowd and the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex will be enough for Hugo Broos’ men to guarantee themselves a place in the finals.

A defeat would leave South Africa failing to qualify for a 24-team Afcon for the second time in a row and would have to cast serious doubt on Broos’ future in charge of the team.

“I think … we are positive, we are going for the win, we know we can push ourselves and play good football,” said Zwane in a brief interview with Safa media.

“We will try to take our chances and we are ready for the game.”

The People’s Choice

Zwane was also a proud man on Sunday after picking up the People’s Choice Award at the South African Sports Awards at the Sun City Superbowl on Saturday.

“I wish I had been there, I would be wearing a suit and nice sneakers!” said Zwane.

“Thanks to everyone for voting for me. It means a lot to me and it shows people care …. I really appreciate their love, I will continue doing a good job and try to entertain them as always.”
