‘Musiek vir die Agtergrond’ set for international release

Sallas de Jager makes his directorial debut with Afrikaans film 'Musiek vir die Agtergrond, which will be released in the US through media company D Street.

‘Musiek vir die Agtergrond’ is a story about a musician who lives a hand-to-mouth existence, playing in pubs until he is discovered by a music producer. Unfortunately, he has to conform to a stage identity he vowed never to become, and is seduced by fame and money to become a sell-out.

De Jager believes the theme of the movie will appeal to people on a global scale and is very excited about it being screened in America.

“We, cast and crew, have worked hard on our craft as filmmakers and are motivated to work even harder now that we know that our work will be seen by an audience used to only seeing the best,” said De Jager in a press release.

Dexter Davis, the CEO of D Street, gave De Jager a ringing endorsement. He said: “Sallas’s directorial debut underscores the tremendous talent he has as a multifaceted filmmaker. We are thrilled about Background Music and can’t wait to bring it to the US audience.”

Those at D Street were so impressed with the first time director that they asked him to produce two films for the company, a drama set in South Africa and a courtroom film set in World War II Germany and America.

“We have great faith in Sallas as a director and wanted to give him an opportunity to spread his wings internationally. ‘1961’ in particular was written by an American filmmaker with a Sundance pedigree and the excitement to produce and shoot this film as a South African production is beyond amazing,” said Davis.

‘Musiek vir die Agtergrond’ will be opening in cinemas next Friday, 11 October.
