IN PHOTOS: No love lost as athletes offer up thrilling athletics at Citybug Interprimary

This year’s Citybug Interprimary will long be remembered by attendees for how evenly contested the day was.

While the bulk of the day was nearly as hot as the athletics on display, the 2026 Citybug Interprimary drew to a close just as rain began to fall during the U13 boys’ relay, ensuring a thrilling and dramatic finale to a fantastic day of competition.

Brilliantly hosted by Laerskool Bergland at Hoërskool Nelspruit on Valentine’s Day, February 14, the participating athletes showed little love for one another as they battled fiercely for glory and gold.

The day began under gloomy skies, with forecasts predicting heavy afternoon rain, bringing back memories of the 2024 interprimary that was cut short by downpours.

However, in a welcome turn of events, only a brief midday drizzle interrupted otherwise perfect athletics conditions.

Laerskool Nelspruit is expected to emerge as the overall winner thanks to another outstanding all-round display, but every school delivered top performances in one of the most competitive interprimaries in recent memory.

Hosts Bergland, along with Laerskool Laeveld, stepped up a gear this year and made their supporters in the pavilion proud.

Laerskool Lydenburg enjoyed great success in the hurdles, while White River Primary impressed across several track events.

Nelspruit Primary once again shone on the track and in the relays, and Laerskool Barberton also stood out with solid performances.

As always, the relays delivered great excitement, with each school enjoying their fair share of visits to the top three steps of the podium.

The day ended in cinematic fashion during the final event – the U13 boys’ relay – as rain began to fall moments before the start.

Roared on by the loudest cheers of the day, hosts Bergland looked set for victory, but White River stole the show with a nail-biting win at the line.

All in all, it was a memorable Citybug Interprimary and a fitting conclusion to the schools’ athletics season.
