Legislature signs MOU with SALGA

The agreement between legislature and SALGA is aimed at ensuring that the voice of local government is heard at the provincial level.

NELSPRUIT – In a move to improve the involvement of local government in law making, oversight and public participation in legislature, the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) in Mpumalanga.

The recent signing, done during legislature’s drive of “Taking the Legislature to the People,” was the outcome of a lengthy discussion between the two parties on the constitutionality of the matter.

The agreement was signed by the speaker, Mr William Lubisi, on behalf of legislature and Cllr Mafika Nkosi on behalf of SALGA.

Lubisi said, “The agreement will create a uniform approach in the manner in which SALGA will participate in law making, oversight and the public participation process of the legislature”.

SALGA Mpumalanga will now be able to participate in the legislature committee activities as part of strengthening the latter’s oversight function. Nkosi said the agreement will ensure that the voice of organised local government is heard at the provincial level.
