Municipal headquarters suffer lack of water

The offices of Mbombela municipality, located in the civic centre, ran dry earlier this week.

NELSPRUIT – Employees of Mbombela Local Municipality experienced a lack of basic services this week, when the municipal offices in the city lacked water for more than a day.

The offices are located at the civic centre. One of the municipality’s employees explained that they received a notice from the facilities manager, Mr Douglas Mabuza, on Monday afternoon at about 12:00.

It informed the approximately 300 people who use the civic centre as offices that the entire building did not have water and that the matter was being investigated. However, according to the source who wanted to remain anonymous for professional reasons, communication on the matter then promptly stopped.

“We can’t use the toilet facilities. We have to go the other buildings or drive home to go to the toilet. Luckily I bring water for myself to drink, because there is none in the taps. Nor is staff provided with water coolers.”

All media queries were referred to Mr Joseph Ngala, spokesman for the municipality. He did not respond to voice messages or emails.

Mr Richmond Jele, spokesman for Sembcorp Silulumanzi, said as far as he had understood, the matter was related to an internal plumbing problem since all the buildings surrounding the civic centre had water provision.

The matter was resolved by yesterday afternoon, when normal water supply was restored throughout the building.
