Class ends the year in high spirits

Summerhill Prep's grade 7 class enjoyed a final outing together and went on an adventurous hike along the Kaapsehoop Escarpment.

What better way to spend a weekend with classmates than to hike along the Kaapsehoop escarpment? Summerhill Prep’s grade seven class did exactly that on October 24 to 26 as a final class outing.

The children began the weekend at Barrets’s Coaches just outside town and marvelled at being inside a train for the first time. Early Saturday morning, after breakfast around the fire, the team set off on a hike. The adventure was made more interesting by names such as Jack’s Corner and Starvation Creek spotted along the trail. The scenery was spectacular and a few pupils even managed a swim in the ice-cold mountain stream.

The group spent Saturday night at Wattles Hut, waking up to a misty Sunday morning. Learning how to pace themselves so as not to lose one another was quite a challenge, as visibility shrunk to just a few metres. The rain luckily held off until the last 400m and the group arrived back in Kaapsehoop, slightly damp but delighted at the fact that they had completed the 30km route.

All but two of the pupils have been together since preschool and the weekend was a great time to hang out and reminisce.
