Police bribery case postponed

Four constables who form part of the White River flying squad appeared in court alongside the woman who allegedly bribed them. The five accused will return to court in March.

MBOMBELA – The four policemen who allegedly solicited a bribe from a taxi driver late last year, briefly appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court last Friday where their case was postponed.

Consts Bongani Nene (35), Sthembiso Mayisela (34), Zakhele Nyundu (31) and Ms Promise Manzini (27) were arrested on November 26 along with Ms Safina Matja (56) after the four police officials allegedly accepted a bribe from Matja.

It is said that Matja was stopped by the policemen on the N4 while she was travelling from Mbombela to Middelburg. They discovered counterfeit All Star tekkies in her minibus taxi. A bribe was allegedly exchanged and Matja blew the whistle when she was stopped by other officials on her way to Middelburg.

The accused were released on R5 000 bail each and returned to court on Friday,when their next court date of March 24 was confirmed.
