Accused hit a wall on new year’s day

A 25-year old man was sentenced to 60 days in prison or a fine of R4 000 after his reckless and negligent driving injured another.

MBOMBELA – A 25-year-old man from Barberton has been sentenced to 60 days in prison or a fine of R4 000 after he drove into a wall and almost killed a man on New Years Day, 2014.

Mr Xolane Floyed Nkosi (25) was arrested on January 3, 2014 after an incident occurred on January 1 that year that led to Nkosi being charged with reckless and negligent driving and an alternative charge of the attempted murder of Mr Sizwe Juluka Mashele.

The latter charge had been withdrawn. According to Nkosi’s statement, he had been driving on the Prison Farm road in Barberton on New Year’s Day when he lost control of his vehicle, a Toyota Corolla.

The vehicle swerved and hit a wall. Mashele, who was standing at the wall, was also hit, but survived the incident. The case against Nkosi was initially heard in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court before it was transferred to the Nelspruit Regional Court, where he received a sentence of 60 days imprisonment or a R4 000 fine on Friday.
