Pupils give their brains a workout at chess and Scrabble tournament

The Hazyview Library hosted Scrabble and chess competitions for local schools during this year's National Library Week.

Competitors had to keep their wits about them, when three local primary schools competed in a chess and Scrabble competition. The event was hosted by the Hazyview Library at its premises on March 23 as part of its Library Week activities and Rising Star Christian School, Khombindlela Primary and Celani Primary participated.

The children had great fun improving their chess skills and learning new words from one another during rounds of Scrabble. The winners of the various age groups and categories received trophies and prizes such as chess sets and Scrabble board games to encourage them to continue practising.

Library Week is annually celebrated during the second week of March and aims to get communities involved in their local library. This year’s theme was “Connect @ your library” and saw institutions across the country teach their community members and schools how to use the library’s resources. They were shown how to use the database to find information or books they needed for projects, basic computer skills, how to use the Internet and how the library itself worked.

The Hazyview Library is known for inviting schools in the area to take part in various competitions (like poetry and reading) during the year, to encourage pupils to read and make use of the library’s services.
