The pupils were also lined up, dressed in an array of colours, flags and headdresses in celebration of Freedom Day.
Past Johan van Rensburg delivered a short sermon in which he reminded the guests of the importance of remembering that a school was a home and, as such, also God’s home. Prayers were said for the school, staff and families.
Mr Adam Wood, chairman of the governing body, told the crowd how fortunate they were to be a part of such a wonderful school and how proud they should be of Summerhill. He and Mr Joe Clark of Ndlovu SPAR joined in cutting the giant red ribbon that had been wound around the new building.
The generosity of the numerous sponsors was gratefully acknowledged and all the pupils sang the Summerhill Values Song before returning to their classrooms. Afterwards the guests enjoyed a cup of tea and snacks.
The principal Ms Coco van Aardt, bursar Ms Kim Christensen and administrator Ms Anita Pillay could start their daily work in their new spacious offices.
