MBOMBELA – The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is doing sterling work on the Mozambique and Swaziland borders. This includes massive smuggling busts and the arrest of hundreds of illegal border crossers.

During April the deployed forces arrested eight wanted criminals and 197 undocumented people from various African countries, Lt Siboniso Maseko, communications officer of the Joint Tactical Headquarters of Mpumalanga confirmed.

According to him they also recovered three stolen vehicles and confiscated more than a ton of dagga valued at R1,5 million, illegal cigarettes valued at R1,3 million and R25 950’s worth of alcohol.

“The Joint Tactical Headquarters Mpumalanga is responsible for conducting border safeguarding operations, also known as Operation Corona, along the international borders with Mozambique and Swaziland,” Maseko explained.

According to him it is under command of the Joint Operations Division of the SANDF whose mandate is, among other obligations, to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of South Africa.

There are currently three companies deployed under the operational command of the Joint Tactical Headquarters Mpumalanga.
