A man who was arrested for the possession of an unlicenced firearm will soon hear if he is going to be granted bail or not. He was previously denied bail and remanded in custody pending his next appearance in the same court tomorrow (Thursday April 7).
Nkosinathi Percy Nkosi (25) of Emabovini Section in Tjakastad near Badplaas made his first court appearance in the Eesterhoek Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday.
Nkosi was arrested by the Elukwatini police last Monday after they received a tip-off.
According to Sgt Peace Mbokane, Elukwatini police spokesman, Nkosi was arrested after police had acted on information given to them by a law-abiding citizen about a man who was in possesssion of an unlicenced firearm.
“The officials who were out on operation duties swiftly visited the alleged scene. Upon their arrival, the unknowing suspect was found red-handed, still holding the 9-mm pistol in his hand inside his room. He was ordered to drop the firearm and he complied. The police then combed his entire apartment and 16 rounds of live ammunition were found,” said Mbokane.
“One of the joys of being a member of the dignified blue is not the regular income but the assurance that the public is safe and sound.
“The community of Tjakastad will now sleep well knowing that a firearm that could have been used to rob, threaten or even kill a human being, has been removed and averted from doing so,” added Mbokane.
The Elukwatini station commander, Col Precious Mabuza, praised the efforts of the police as well as the community member who gave the information.
“Firearms are dangerous, especially when they are in the wrong hands.
“We will continue to do our best to ensure that those who will be found in possession of such guns without the necessary licence are being sent where they belong, which is behind bars,” said Mabuza.
