Men arrested for alleged poaching

Three men were arrested for wildlife poaching and possession of an illegal firearm last Sunday morning after a tip-off to the Komatipoort police.

KOMATIPOORT –  According to spokesman for the police station, Const Natacia Mbuyane, they were informed of a white van suspected of being used in poaching activities.

“Police rushed to the scene and found three suspects in a white Toyota bakkie. A shot gun with two rounds of ammunition was found along with three Impala carcasses and two duiker carcasses,” Mbuyane said.

The suspects were taken into police custody and appeared in the Tonga Magistrate’s Court the next day.

One man (21) appeared on two charges, one for the possession of an unlicensed firearm after confessing to be the owner of the firearm, and the other of wildlife poaching.

The owner of the vehicle (59) was also charged with wildlife poaching.

The case was postponed to Tuesday afternoon and transferred to the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court.

Mbuyane added that the police appreciated the tip-off that led to the arrest.
