KAMHLUSHWA- Children were encouraged to embrace their culture during Heritage Month celebrations at Kamhlushwa Primary on September 29.
Learners and teachers dressed in traditional attire and showcased traditional singing and dancing.
Guest speaker, Sabelo Matikwana highlighted the importance of embracing culture through traditional clothing, food, learning and indigenous knowledge.

“Traditional attire differs according to the different stages of growth. Today traditional attire has been added a lot of decorations to make it look beautiful. Though there is nothing wrong with decorating traditional attire, it confuses children and those that do not know the Swati culture. If you are Tsonga, wear Tsonga traditional clothes,” he stated.
He also spoke on the importance of knowing and embracing language.
“African languages will diminish if we don’t teach our kids to know their language,” said Matikwana.

Matikwana also talked about traditional food and how they contain a lot of nutrition and some have medicinal value.
Khosi Mongwe-Mhlongo explained that she and her fellow teachers grew up eating Swati traditional food, and highlighted the benefits of this diet.
To end of the exciting event, guests and pupils were treated to delicious traditional foods like timbabe, inkhaka, likhotse, tinceke, imbasha, umsobo and ematsanga.
