UPDATE: Six people dead in accident

Five learners and a taxi driver died and 25 people were injured in a collision between a bus and taxi between Mdladla and Phiva this morning.

A minibus taxi collided head-on with a bus on the D2940 road between Mdladla and Phiva around 07:00 this morning.

Four learners died at the scene and another one, as well as the taxi driver, passed away at the hospital. Around 8 are critically injured and 17 seriously injured. They were rushed to Tonga Hospital.

A case of culpable homicide was opened at Kamhlushwa SAPS.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison has dispatched its Safety Engineering Team to the scene to investigate.

Motorists had to use alternative roads as the scene took more than two hours to clear.

MALALANE –  According to the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesman Joseph Mabuza, the crash occurred when a minibus taxi collided head-on with a bus.

“Four of the five learners died at the scene while another learner died at the hospital.”

He said 25 people who were critically injured were rushed to the nearest hospital. “The driver is among those who were critically injured.”

A case of culpable homicide was registered with the police. “At this stage, the circumstances surrounding the accident are not clear,” he added.

The department dispatched its Safety Engineering Team to the scene to investigate the accident.

The road took more than two hours to clear and motorists had to use alternative roads to reach their destinations.
