Baby found wrapped in a plastic bag in bushes in Tonga

Two community members were shocked to find a baby wrapped in a plastic bag abandoned in the bushes in Block A, Tonga, on Monday afternoon.

TONGA – A baby girl’s cries led community members to where she had been abandoned in the bushes in Block A around 16:30 on Monday.

A woman had been walking home from work, when she heard a baby crying in the nearby bushes. She asked a pedestrian close-by to join her and they found the infant wrapped in a plastic bag. The baby is estimated to be about two weeks old.

The two community members took her to the Tonga police station and an ambulance was summoned to transport her to the nearby hospital. She is currently being cared for at Tonga Hospital.

A case of child abandonment has been opened and police are looking for the child’s family. Anyone who can help track them down should contact Det Sgt Lesedi Dhladhla on 079-501-5053.
