Workers picket for wages and bonuses

On Wednesday, the representative of the workers confirmed that they had reached an agreement with management and they are currently resolving the matter.

Workers of Coastal Hire Nelspruit picketed to demand bonuses and wage increases. The workers demonstrated last Friday outside the local business.

They blockaded the entrance with refuse, sang and brandished posters. According to one of the workers, they wanted a 100 per cent bonus and 10 per cent pay increase.

“We are not happy and we have addressed our concerns with the manager. We have a lot of issues in our work place that affects us daily, although for now we just want our wage and bonus matter solved.”

During an interview with Lowvelder, Danru Meiring from Coastal Hire, said he was already in the process of negotiating with the workers.

Meiring added that due to Covid-19, the company was not operational for months. “We spoke and I explained that I wished they would accept a six per cent increase and 70 per cent bonus. It has been such a challenging year and we suffered a great deal, just like most companies. I did everything I could to make sure that not a single person got retrenched.

We did not retrench anyone even if we did not generate funds for months. As management we are all on good terms with the workers and we happily allowed them to get back to work. We are also ready to sit and negotiate all over again. None of the other branches raised any issues regarding their wages and bonuses,” he said.
