Funerals postponed till mother is discharged

The family and friends of the five people involved in the fatal accident on the R40 near Barberton two weeks ago, are said to be waiting before they hold the funerals of those who had died until the last family member is out of hospital.

MBOMBELA – The accident occurred around midday on July 17. Four family members, a grandfather (54), grandmother (54), grandchild (6) and mother (35), and a close family friend (38) had been travelling on the R40 from Barberton towards Mbombela in a Land Rover, and allegedly swerved to avoid another vehicle, which caused theirs to roll.

The family friend was declared dead on the scene, while the child was airlifted to hospital where she later died, too. The grandmother was also rushed to hospital and died afterwards. The mother was in a critical condition, while the grandfather sustained fractures and bruises.

A family spokesperson said they had decided not to name the members until the funerals had taken place. They said the mother had recently been made aware of the death of her child, her mother and her close friend. “She (the mother) has been informed of the death of her mum and daughter, and is holding it together with a lot of help and support from close family,” said the spokesperson.

“There are no funeral arrangements set as of yet. All the family have decided that the mother needs to be at the funeral of her daughter and mum as soon as she is recovered.”
