Deputy minister engages faith-based organisations

JANE FURSE – The Department of Social Development’s (DSD) deputy minister, Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, led an engagement session with non-profit organisations (NPOs) with the primary focus on church organisations operating and congregating around Sekhukhune. The session was held at OAT Lodge on recently.
A DSD report presented by the deputy minister showed there are 25 034 registered NPOs in Limpopo, but only 8 908 of them are compliant.
She said there are 2 811 registered religious centres around the province and only 1 174 of them are recognised.
The department’s campaign is titled “Know Your NPO Status”, and the social development plans to work closely with all NPOs servicing and interacting with communities on a daily basis.
The deputy minister, Bogopane-Zulu, warned church ministers, pastors and stewards about the sexual abuse reported in their organisations on a daily basis.
Non-compliance in relations to SARS and any other binding regulations of NPOs and faith-based leaders or NPO board directors receiving remunerations, might lead to deregistration of such organisations.
This nationwide campaign is introduced to the public to also remind church leaders about the objective behind why churches are established in communities.
Bogopane-Zulu also announced that her department plans to engage with sex workers operating around Limpopo on Monday, on challenges they face in their daily operations.
