Eskom issues final warning to prepaid users

To prevent the meter from becoming inoperable, customers are urged to buy electricity tokens from authorised vendors before Sunday, November 24.

Eskom has issued a final warning to all prepaid users to recode their meters or lose functionality.

The deadline is November 24. Meters still using KRN1 (Key Revision Number 1) will no longer accept electricity tokens after Sunday.

Eskom said that once your current credit is depleted, you will lose power, and the meter will become inoperable. A replacement meter will cost customers up to R12 000.

“To prevent the meter from becoming inoperable, losing power, and incurring replacement costs, it is critical that all customers, including those who have not purchased electricity in the last six months or more, to buy electricity tokens from authorised vendors by November 24,” said Eskom.

The three steps to recode the meter:

1. Key in the first 20 digits of your recode token and wait for it to be accepted.
2. Key in the second 20 digits of your recode token and wait for it to be accepted.
3. Key in the last 20 digits of your purchased token to recharge your meter.

The City of Mbombela (CoM) reminds customers that the recoding of meters is done at no cost to customers and warns them to be cautious about scammers who may attempt to take advantage of the recoding process and request payment for this service.

The municipality has a 24-hour dedicated call centre that will be able to provide assistance to clients. Call centre: 013 759 9303 to 9307.
