National rifle challenge hosted at Potato Seed Production
About 70 sharpshooters attended the event which was eventually won by the husband and wife duo, Russell and Kim Ferreira.
The Potato Seed Production Farm in the Long Tom Pass hosted the South African Precision Rifle Federation’s (SAPRF) annual national championships on the weekend of November 16 and 17.
Approximately 70 sharpshooters affiliated with the SAPRF lined up for various long-distance challenges.
Precision rifle is a multistage, long-range practical shooting competition. During a shoot, competitors engage steel targets (widely referred to as gongs) at ranges of between 90m and 1 200m from a variety of unconventional positions.
Each stage is timed and on average, competitors usually shoot between six and 10 stages per day, and between six and 12 rounds per stage.
The total round count for a single day of shooting is usually between 60 and 80 rounds.

Russell Ferreira won the factory category, and his wife, Kim, was the ladies’ champion.

Kim and Russell are members of the Highveld Rifle Club in Randburg, Gauteng, and are also included in the SA Protea team.
They have recently returned from the international championships in the USA, where South Africa obtained a third place.
The nationals are the first match to count towards the IPRF2026 season. It is purely a duplicate to keep the scoring straightforward for the new season.
