University of Mpumalanga dean reappointed to Presidential Advisory Council
He was first appointed in 2019 when he served in the sixth administration.
A University of Mpumalanga (UMP) dean is among those appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa to join his Economic Advisory Council for the Seventh Administration.
Prof Vusi Gumede, the dean of the Faculty of Economics, Development and Business Sciences, has been reappointed since his initial appointment in the Sixth Administration.
He has held various senior government positions before joining the academia.
The members of the council play an important role in guiding the Seventh Administration in its pursuit of rapid, inclusive and sustainable economic growth and job creation. Their role is to ensure consistency and coherence in the implementation of economics.
He has continued to serve the institution with tenacity and drive.
“When I was first appointed in 2019, I was called and asked if I was willing to serve on the Presidential Economic Advisory Council. I submitted the required documents, and a few weeks later, I received the letter of appointment.”
This time around, I was called and asked to continue serving, and I gladly accepted as I felt it means we were making an important contribution during the Sixth Administration’s tenure. It is an honour to be of assistance to our government and society. I am pleased with the vote of confidence,” said Gumede.

The council constitutes the state of international economics, macroeconomics, labour economics, economics of education as well as the economics of poverty, inequality and urban development.
Gumede studied economics up to PhD, obtaining his PhD in economics from the University of KwaZulu-Natal at age 27. He also has a postgraduate qualification in public policy and leadership. He thrives on being a cornerstone for the success of his students, having supervised 18 doctoral students and 10 masters students to completion.

He has published numerous journal articles, book chapters, essays, working papers, research reports and many opinion articles, as well as 16 books.
Gumede has been an academic since 2010, holding professorships at the University of Johannesburg and the University of South Africa, where he was also the director for the Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute.
